Where to Start when creating your
T R O P I C A L  G A R D E N
from Creative Gardens

The first thing to consider when designing your garden is what you will
use the space for ie: entertaining, children’s play area or simply for visual
effect. Look at the area you have to work with, think of the types of plants
you intend planting and consider their mature height and size.
For example, you wouldn't plant a Timor Black Bamboo in a very small courtyard, you would use a smaller
variety to achieve a similar look, and with Palms you wouldn't plant a Cuban Royal or Alexander you would
go for a smaller and more slender variety such as Solitaire, Venitia Winnii or Johannis.
.
The first & most important step in preparing your garden is the soil.
Use a good enriched organic blend garden soil “not top soil” spend your
money wisely here as this is the growing basis of the garden, remember
the plants will only do as well as the conditions you give them. If you use
poor soil you will get poor results. The soil should be as deep as possible
we suggest a minimum of 300mm. If possible shape the soil to mounds
rather than flat beds to add shape & height to the garden or you can slop
the bed from the back down to the front. This is also more beneficial for
the plants, giving them much more depth to grow in and creates far
better drainage.
.
The plant selection for a Tropical Garden is endless; the main thing
to remember here is to use foliage for colour and texture not flowers. In
general feature plants should be used as single plantings except when
using single stemmed palms, then it is best to plant in groups of 3 with
each palm at a different height. This creates a natural cluster. Smaller
infill plants should be planted in groups of 3, 5 or 7, this will allow the
plants to fill into a group and the colour and texture will be more dramatic,
rather than blending in with other plants and becoming lost in the garden.
To complete the garden you MUST mulch. Mulching correctly can also be
the deciding factor on whether you will have a successful garden. We

recommend using a fine mulch such as bark fines or soft fall bark, laid to a depth of 100mm, this will aid
in keeping the soil moist, insulates the soil from the heat and cold and also helps to suppress the weeds.
Water your new garden well for the first 2-3 weeks then reduce watering to once or twice a week, keeping
in mind that longer watering is best to encourage a deep root system, rather than more frequent shorter
watering's.

Finally add your personalized touch with a Balinese Pavilion, Statue or Water Feature to create
that relaxed holiday feel, that you can’t wait to come home to each day.
